This torch song is the signature tune for the 1981 Broadway musical, Dreamgirls, in which Effie White, a singer with the girl group The Dreams, proclaims to her manager, Curtis Taylor Jr., that she loves him.
Jennifer Holliday, who played Effie in the original 1981 Broadway production, recorded the original and definitive version of this song. Released as a single, it peaked at #22 in the US and #32 in the UK.
Jennifer Hudson played Effie in the 2006 film version of Dreamgirls, winning an Oscar for her role and her version peaked at #60 in the Hot 100. The song hovered in the lower reaches of the UK singles chart three years later after a succession of performances on UK reality shows before peaking at the same chart position as Holliday's version.
