Birdy explained to The Sun: "Making this album I read the book Memoirs of a Geisha. I've never been to Japan but the book took me there with its beautiful imagery. I fell in love with the culture." "The story is about a girl who is ripped away from her parents and the countryside to become a geisha. She grows up in a hard and alien world where she learns to be strong and stand on her own – and that resonated with me."
