A "mic drop" is the gesture of intentionally dropping one's microphone at the end of a performance or speech after a triumphant performance to signal victory. This boastful jam was recorded by BTS for their 2017 EP Love Yourself: Her. It finds the Korean boy band trumpeting the results of their hard work such as winning music awards.

BTS member RM revealed that the song was inspired by former US president Barack Obama's mic drop at the 2016 White House Correspondents' Dinner, adding, "It's a song in which listeners can feel BTS' tremendous swag."

Following BTS' US TV debut at the American Music Awards on November 19, 2017, the K-pop boy band released a new remix of the song produced by electronic DJ Steve Aoki and featuring a guest verse from Brooklyn rapper Desiigner. BTS performed the remix version of the song on American talk shows The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, aired in late November 2017.
