Running to around 3 minutes 10 seconds, this is a typical Jam anti-authoritarian rant taking a swipe at the police in particular. Although it does not mention it overtly, the song contains a clear reference to the murder of Liddle Towers in the last verse: Bring forward those six pigs We wanna see them swing so high This shameful incident was also covered by Tom Robinson with the thoughtful "Blue Murder" and by Angelic Upstarts with the more direct "The Murder Of Liddle Towers." The earlier reference to "Uncle Jimmy" alludes to James Callaghan, who served as Prime Minister from April 1976 to May 1979.
