Jon Bon Jovi wrote this song for the 2019 Netflix documentary film To Be of Service. The film follows war veterans suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) back home and explores the comfort brought to them by security dogs.
Jon Bon Jovi has a military heritage - his parents met when both were in the US Marine Corps in the late 1950s. He penned "Unbroken" from the perspective of a soldier dealing with PTSD back home in America. "This song is meant to honor America's veterans and their service, but I also wanted to take an unflinching look at the reality of their daily lives and struggles," said the frontman.
Island Records and Bon Jovi donated 100% of net proceeds from the download of "Unbroken" during its first year of release to the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation.
