Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Here Is Gone. By Songfacts®.

Lead singer John Rzeznik described this as a cynical tune about being in a casual relationship with someone, but wanting something more. Rzeznik, who moved from his native Buffalo to LA after his divorce, told Billboard magazine: "I'm mean, I'm single, I'm living 3,000 miles from home. Trying to figure things out is pretty much what was going on in this process."

This is the lead single from the Goo Goo Dolls' seventh studio album, Gutterflower. The album reunited the band with Rob Cavallo, who produced their previous release, Dizzy Up The Girl. That album sold more than 4 million copies in the US, while Gutterflower only sold around 700,000. It did, however, achieve a higher chart position, peaking at #4 compared to Dizzy's #15.

The music video, filmed mostly in Lancaster, California, features the band performing in front of a half-constructed house and shots of underwear-clad girls swimming in a pool. In a 2008 video commentary, bassist Robby Takac explained the original concept was supposed to portray the band going "through an entire day in a very short amount of time," but the idea didn't pan out. Rzeznik said it cost more to make the video than it did to produce the entire album because hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent to build a house only to tear it down and use a different one. The clip was directed by Francis Lawrence, who created videos for Avril Lavigne, Janet Jackson, Green Day, Rihanna, and The Backstreet Boys before directing films like The Hunger Games and Constantine.
