This song is about living on the messages of those inspirational figures of the past.

The music video for the song was based on the lyrics, and featured images of the band playing in front of images of figures that inspired them. These figures include Joe Strummer, Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King Jr., Wendy O. Williams, Malcolm X, The Million Man March, Jim Morrison, Glenn Danzig, Johnny Cash, Jello Biafra, Peter Tosh, Chuck D, Randy Rhoads, Iggy Pop, and Janis Joplin.

Guitarist, Tom Morello on his guitar solo (from Sony Musicbox): "I pretty much enjoy that guitar solo because it's one of the most annoying I've ever played." He describes it as the "Laughing monkey solo" and says that the rest of the band, particularly bassist Tim Commerford, hates Tom's solo.
