Gallagher wrote "Shockwave" with two of the key collaborators behind his debut album As You Were: Greg Kurstin, who also produced the track. Kurstin won the 2018 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, in part for his work on As You Were. Andrew Wyatt, who co-wrote three songs on As You Were, including its lead single "Wall of Glass."
