The Weeknd closes his Beauty Behind the Madness album with this track where he shows remorse to his "angel" for his bad behavior. The singer has decided to let his "angelic" girl go because of the damage his hedonistic lifestyle will do to her. He hopes she can find a lover who will properly care for her.
During the second half of the song, teenage LA-based singer-songwriter Maty Noyes joins The Weeknd as the voice of "the angel". She explained the collaboration in a Genius attribution: "I was working with the producer Stephan Moccio and he did 'Earned It' and a lot of other songs with Abel, one of which was 'Angel.' I was set up to work with him and we had a really great connection…. One night we were in the studio super late and we got a crazy idea, we were just like, "okay what if we just tried to sing on 'Angel' and see how Abel would feel about it, just lay something down and see what happens. He could either hate it or he could love it." And a few weeks later I got the call saying that he loved it."
