Björk describing her songwriting technique in Q Magazine October 2007: "'Vertebrae By Vertebrae' has images of Mother Nature unfurling her tail. I live in New York part-time where people are terrified of nature, so I wanted to turn Mother Nature into a B-movie character."
In the same article, Björk says of the album: "Volta is a voyage - a lot of it was written on a boat (a houseboat she shares with partner and artist, Matthew Barney). That was reflected in the African and Chinese musicians we used."
