This is the second single from country music group Lady A's third studio album, Own The Night. Hillary Scott explained why they named the set after this tune: "One of our favorite songs on the new record is called 'We Owned the Night,' which is about a special once-in-a-lifetime moment, and we thought that naming the album around that same sentiment was really appropriate," she said. "It's also about the experience we want to create every night in concert for our fans ... together, we own the night!" The single was released on August 16, 2011 via Capitol Records.
Lady A's Charles Kelley explained why the trio chose this as the follow-up single to "Just a Kiss." "One of the main reasons is the live feel to it. It had kind of an urgency and an excitement to it that we wanted to represent this record. 'Just A Kiss' is very Lady A, and 'We Owned the Night' is kind of a departure for us in a way, just the sound of it is very mandolin-heavy and it's got a lot of different organic elements, which is really exciting for us to go down that road. But I think more than anything, the message of it - owning the night - we thought it would be a great, great thing."
The Lady A trio featured in a 2012 advertising campaign in which they take some swigs from bottles of 100% Natural Lipton Iced Tea during a concert. Refreshed, the trio then perform this song to a sold-out crowd.
