"If There's A God In Heaven (What's He Waiting For?)" was thought by some to be a savage indictment of poverty and human suffering, but shortly after the release of the album, Elton himself claimed it was a parody. According to Barry Toberman's biography, Elton said to co-writer Bernie Taupin: "Let's do a song like that with a really tacky lyric and see if we can get away with it."
