This song is about the safety net of communicating by text instead of meeting a person in real life. I don't like April Fools Just when you think you know me I don't play catfish rules I'd rather stay Emoji The song was inspired in part an American reality-based documentary television series Catfish. Au/Ra is obsessed with the MTV show, which is about the truths and lies of online dating.
Au/Ra said regarding the song's meaning in a press release: "'Emoji,' to me, is about an online friendship/relationship where one person is afraid to show the other person who they really are, in fear of disappointing them. Sometimes it's just easier and safer to stay living in a fantasy than face reality."
The sci-fi-esque visual was directed by Sophia Ray, who also shot the lyric video for 5 Seconds of Summer's "Don't Stop." "This music video has a core of dark and emotional sentiments. I love creating content like that, something with a plot twist that makes you think twice," Au/Ra told Billboard.
