This song is a story about a couple. Some people think that the story about the man relates to Gerard Way, the lead singer of My Chemical Romance. However, the man appears to be very rich, with few friends. He has a wife or girlfriend who is a gold digger, and possibly a prostitute. It seems as if the two will be married.
This song is based on a short story by William Faulkner called A Rose for Emily. In the story, Emily falls in love with a man named Homer, but he is always looking at other men, so it is assumed that he is homosexual. She kills him with cyanide because he wouldn't marry her, then keeps his dead body in her room and sleeps with it. Gerard Way adds his own twist to the story though, with the line, "Down by the pool he doesn't have many friends as they are face down and bloated, snap a shot with the lens." This insinuates that she kills any man that he looks at as well. "If you marry me, would you bury me, would you carry me, to the end?" - this is what she wishes for.
Just to be flashy, rhythm guitarist Frank Iero played this song with one hand during their American tour in 2005.
