Flowery Branch, Georgia native Andrew Jannakos, first gained some notability after performing a blind audition on NBC's The Voice in spring 2019. He subsequently built a robust following on social media. Prior to this song's release, Jannakos posted snippets of it on TikTok. The preview went viral on the platform, and there was huge interest in the guitar-driven track by the time of its release on September 15, 2020.

The song recounts the long-distance relationship Jannakos had with his girlfriend (now wife), Katie. Come on, please stay Jannakos explained that the song is about how he never wanted the time he spent with Katie to end, but some people connected to "Gone Too Soon" in different ways. "Some may interpret the song being about 'the other person' in a messy relationship," Jannakos said, "and there are certainly some parallels to that feeling, but to me, it's about the love of my life."

Jannakos wrote the song alongside singer-songwriter Josh Bricker and newcomer Jason Afable.
