Written by Davis, this song finds him encountering and old flame. He didn't expect to see her, and all the old feelings come rushing back. He recounts the breakup, dredging up the awful memories of how she moved on to another man who "satisfies her mind." Seeing her again is unbearable, as he's nowhere near over her.
Paul Davis enjoyed a long career as a singer/songwriter in pop, country and soul music from the late 1960s through the 1980s. This, probably his best-known song, blends all three genres.
This song had an unusually long run in the US Top 40, taking almost five months to climb to #7 where it spent three weeks. Davis had a few other US Top 40 hits over the next few years, including a #6 with "'65 Love Affair" and a #1 Country hit with "You're Still New To Me" (a duet with Marie Osmond) in 1986 before retiring from the music business. Davis died of a heart attack at age 60 on April 22, 2008.
