Originally recorded by Kenny Loggins for his Vox Humana album, the song was written by Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins and Ed Sandford who had written "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" with McDonald. It was the second time McDonald had "covered" a Loggins tune. "What a Fool Believes" was written for the Doobie Brothers but Michael and the Doobies recorded it after Kenny sang his "preview" version. McDonald also co-wrote "This Is It" for Kenny, then the two collaborated on "I Gotta Try," which Michael sang first then Kenny. The two sort of rivaled each other for a while.
