Clifford T. Ward (1944-2001) never had the commercial success his fans felt he deserved; he has been compared with Paul McCartney, and nowhere is this more evident than in "Gaye," his biggest hit. Released April 13, 1973 backed by another self-penned song, "Home Thoughts From Abroad," it is said to have been inspired by several women, and was by far his biggest hit.
