This song is about the paradox, highlighted by physicist Enrico Fermi (1901–1954), concerning the contradiction between the lack of evidence for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations and the probability estimates that intelligent life should be common in the universe. Vocalist M. Shadows explained to The Sun: "It says, OK, if there are all these planets then mathematically there has to be life out there. But why hasn't it come to us? It doesn't get into the answers as there are things you could answer it with but it takes it from a human perspective, looking at the stars and wondering what our ancestors did before all this technology. Before we were looking into our phones all day we were looking up, looking at the stars to figure things out."
