Four years after he married his high school sweetheart, Sophia Martinez, she died from complications during surgery to treat her congenital heart disease. Instead of resorting to drink and drugs to escape his heartbreak, Gokey put his energies into starting a foundation in his late wife's name, Sophia's Heart Foundation. He also found love again and married Leyicet Peralta three-and-a-half years after losing Sophia.
