The closing track of American Beauty/American Psycho, Pete Wentz wrote of the song: "To me this is the close of the record, the wink right before fin,' the light switch turned off in the room. This is a love song to me. The world doesn't make sense to me but I'd rather it not make sense when I am lying next to you. We are at the end of the day just chemicals but maybe mine make more sense with yours than anyone else. Modern anxiety, clinical love."
Joey Badass of the hip-hop collective Pro Era guest stars on the version from the remix album Make America Psycho Again.
American Beauty/American Psycho was the followup to Fall Out Boy's comeback album, Save Rock And Roll. The band credited AB/AP producer Jake Sinclair for helping them embrace modern recording methods. Wentz told Alternative Press: "He's helped us understand… The way contemporary music, whether it be EDM or pop music or hip-hop or rock, the way that it's made is a lot more piecemeal. He's helped us realize that we can record parts that are essentially for demos on our laptop, and they're able to make it to the final product. It's interesting; it's kind of like showing cavemen how to use an espresso machine. We're like, 'Whoa, that's cool - that's awesome! I didn't even really know about coffee.'"
