This song apparently tells the story of an abandoned child who ends up becoming a drug addict. The song's protagonist comes to know her yet is incapable of helping her cope with her unfortunate condition.
In the album's commentary, RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea explained that the original version of the tune used the bridge as the chorus.
For the mesmerizing outro, created with a modular synthesizer, guitarist John Frusciante looked to his musical idols for inspiration. "I wanted to have a lot of movement on this recording," he explained. "I was inspired by people like Brian Eno and people like Jimi Hendrix who didn't just stop at playing their drums and guitars and bass and everything but actually tried to turn things into a sonic landscape and tried to make it interesting from a sonic standpoint as well as from a playing standpoint."
