"MUTT" is a song about trust issues... with a side of canine philosophy. It's a brooding, soulful track where Leon Thomas is reluctant to let his guard down. He sings about seeing past pretty faces and having trouble trusting, but he comes around and allows himself to be open to the possibilities.
The song is the title track from Thomas' second album, and was released as its lead single on August 9, 2024. A remix featuring Freddie Gibbs arrived three weeks later.
The inspiration for this song and the rest of the album came from a rather unexpected place: Thomas' dog. Or, more specifically, the dog his ex gave him before they split. While adjusting to life post-breakup, Thomas noticed that his pup, who had never received formal training, was a bit of a handful. In time, it dawned on him that he and his dog had more in common than he'd like to admit. "It made me think about the give and take in relationships and the struggle for obedience," Thomas explained. He noted the dog is a mutt: imperfect but well-meaning, messy but loyal. And just like that, an album theme was born: a metaphor for not being a perfect partner but having the best of intentions.
