Written by Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen, "Miss You in a Heartbeat" was first recorded by a group called The Law, who included it on their 1991 self-titled album, their only release. Collen's friend Paul Rodgers was the lead singer in the group, which also included Kenney Jones and Pino Palladino. Def Leppard released the song as a single in 1993, and in January 1994 it reached #39 US (the song also charted in Canada and the Philippines). Also in 1994, the song was included on their album Retro Active.

In our interview with Phil Collen he said that his son Rory was the inspiration for this song. "When he was a little baby, that's when I wrote that about missing the family and all that stuff," Collen said.
