Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Liberty Belle. By Songfacts®.

This call-to-arms post-punk anthem is a homage to the Liberties, a neighborhood in Dublin that several Fontaines D.C. members have called home. Frontman Grain Chatten asserts it is the last stronghold of true Irish identity. "'Liberty Belle' is a lament to the death of old Dublin, written by people who couldn't afford the new one," he explained.

You know I love that violence That you get around here That kind of ready-steady violence The ready-steady violence chorus was inspired by Chatten's walk to work and the cognitive dissonance of seeing something and being unable to accept it as reality. "I'd be confronted by domestic violence, bloody noses, heroin addicts curled up in phone boxes, racism and I'd cope by listening to my iPod," he told Uncut magazine.

Originally self-released as Fontaines D.C's first single in May 2017, "Liberty Belle" features on their debut album Dogrels. The record was released to acclaim from most music critics, and BBC Radio 6 Music chose Dogrels as their 2019 Album of the Year.
