This is one of the few songs on The River that evokes both of the album's emotional themes: The fun pop party and the darker disillusioned working class.
This has become a stage favorite for Springsteen and fans alike. The song is highlighted by the weaving vocals in the final vamp (done by Springsteen, Roy Bittan, and Steven Van Zandt on the record and its subsequent tour). At the 2001 "Live In New York City" concert, the weaving vocals were done by Springsteen, Van Zandt, Patti Scialfa, Nils Lofgren and Clarence Clemons. It also captures a lot of vocal participation from the audience.
