Croll told The Sun that the title track of his debut album was inspired by his grandmother and her developing dementia. He explained: "Disarray for me sums up the chaos of my family having to deal with it, mentally, emotionally and financially. The 'sweet' part sums up how even though it was such a hard time with so much chaos it's brought the family together. In the verses, I wanted to keep the intimate and stripped back. In the choruses I wanted it to open up to this thick, multitracked, harmonised choir."
