This is a cover of Randy Travis' hit from his second album, Always and Forever. Travis' original version topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart for two weeks in 1988 and won him an American Music Award for Favorite Country Single.
Underwood lists on her official bio, Always and Forever, along with Martina McBride's Greatest Hits and the Foo Fighters' In Your Honor as her 3 favorite albums.
Underwood explained to msn.com why she chose this song: "I knew I wanted to do a cover, and I think it's a lot easier to do a song when you switch the gender. Then nobody can compare it to the original - it's just blatantly so different that you can't compare and say, 'Oh, this one isn't as good.' But then I couldn't find any that I wanted to do, and I was going through my iTunes one day and just found this one. I've always loved the song, it's got such a great melody, and I felt it was one that a female could definitely pull off."
She added, "For some reason, you always expect the guy to be the one that leaves and then comes back and asks to be forgiven or whatever. I don't think there are too many songs where the female screws up and asks the guy to take her back, so I thought it would be good to put that out there."
