Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Eva Cassidy. By Songfacts®.

A shy and reportedly self-critical singer, Eva Cassidy achieved a level of fame after her death that she never approached while living. The soprano "song interpreter" was known primarily in her native Maryland and nearby Washington, D.C. However, when Blix Street issued a posthumous release of a compilation of Cassidy's recordings in 1998, her music was introduced to a national audience. Since then, she has sold millions of albums and her music has gained worldwide acclaim.

Cassidy began her career in the mid-1980s as background singer for Chris Biondo, who introduced her to Chuck Brown. They paired up on the bluesy, jazzy album The Other Side in 1992. Cassidy also fronted her own band, with Biondo playing bass, and she began recording tracks for the album that would later become Eva by Heart, which features Cassidy's cover of Christine McVie's "Songbird." A decade later, "Songbird" would be on the soundtrack for the romantic comedy, Love Actually. The only solo album of Cassidy's music that was released while she was alive was Live at Blues Alley, recorded over two nights at a club in Washington, D.C. in 1996.

The majority of Cassidy's recordings are covers of other songs. On a website run by Cassidy's cousin, she said that Eva told her that she did not like the songs she wrote and preferred to interpret other songs that she liked better than her own. In addition to "Songbird," some of Cassidy's most popular covers are "Over The Rainbow," frequently requested during Cassidy's live shows in local clubs, and "Fields of Gold," by Sting. American figure skater Michelle Kwan famously skated to Cassidy's version of "Fields of Gold" during the skating exhibition at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
