Mac Miller was born Malcolm James McCormick in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents were photographer Karen Meyers, and architect Mark McCormick.
Mac Miller rapped for the first time during a weed-smoking session at the age of 14. He spat a freestyle while a beat was playing, and it turned out to be better than anyone expected. Before that, he'd wanted to be a singer.
He was a self-taught musician - Miller played the piano, guitar, drums, and bass. The rapper wrote and arranged all of the music on his 2012 EP, You, which features him crooning over lounging jazz instrumentals. The record was released under the moniker Larry Lovestein & The Velvet Revival.
