One of the top pop-punk bands of the 2000s, Good Charlotte was formed in 1995 by students at La Plata High School in Maryland, led by the twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden.
Good Charlotte made ripples with their 2000 self-titled debut album, but their big splash came with their second, The Young And The Hopeless, in 2002. It spawned the breakthrough single "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous," which got them on radio and MTV. Along with bands like Simple Plan and All-American Rejects, they followed Green Day's lead in making fast, loud, youth-driven music tinged with humor.
The Madden twins were born with the last name Combs but used their mother's maiden name, Madden, when they started performing. This was because it made a better stage name and because their father walked out on the family when they were 16. The twins didn't officially change their names to Madden until 2009.
