Roger Miller was born in Texas and raised in Oklahoma. After a period in the US army, Miller moved to Nashville to try to sell his songs to record companies.
Miller initially found fame as a songwriter. His biggest UK success before "King Of The Road" was as songwriter of Del Shannon's #2 hit The Swiss Maid. Country stars such as George Jones and Faron Young also recorded Miller material before he went solo.
