Deer Tick frontman John McCauley came up with the band's name after a camping trip in the forests of Indiana. After returning home from the excursion, McCauley found a deer tick in his scalp; the first time he'd ever encountered the insect even though he'd been fishing and camping numerous times growing up. He thought the name Deer Tick "sounded cool."
On June 16, 2010, Deer Tick made their TV debut by performing on The Late Show with David Letterman. Although their album The Black Dirt Sessions had just been released a week before, the band decided to play "Baltimore Blues No. 1" from their first album War Elephant instead.
In May 2009, NBC news anchor Brian Williams featured Deer Tick on his web-based music interview program, BriTunes. Apparently Williams was a huge fan of the song "Dirty Dishes" from Deer Tick's first album War Elephant, so he had to have the band on the program.
