In 2011, The Sheepdogs beat 15 other bands in Rolling Stone's "Choose the Cover" contest. The band appeared on the cover of RS on August 18, 2011, becoming the first unsigned band in the history of the magazine to do so. As part of the contest, The Sheepdogs also won a deal with Atlantic Records and a chance to record a new album with The Black Keys drummer and producer Patrick Carney.
In 2011, The Sheepdogs appeared on season 9 of the hit reality show Project Runway. Contestants on the show had to outfit the band and give them a unique "rock 'n roll" look. The Sheepdogs also performed at the end of the competition.
The Sheepdogs are big fans of facial hair. As of 2012, guitarist Leot Hanson hadn't shaved his face in over seven years. The band also supported the Movember movement in 2011 by adding $1 to every ticket for their Hamilton, Ontario show and donating that money to the cause.
