An Horse's name derived from an ongoing argument singer Kate Cooper had with her sister regarding grammar. Cooper's sister, a book editor, insisted that "An" should come before "H" sounds rather than "A" but Cooper disagreed. After receiving a sweater from her sister with the slogan "An Horse" on it as a joke, Cooper decided that it would be a great name for a band.
After one An Horse show, Murray from The Wiggles approached singer Kate Cooper and actually thanked her for using correct grammar in her band's name. In an interview with Spin, Cooper said her niece thinks she's the coolest because one of The Wiggles knows who she is.
When discussing band names with Spin, Kate Cooper from An Horse said that two of her favorites are Arcade Fire and No Anchor. She also said that anything with the word "funk" in it "isn't good" and that "it should be illegal," such as Funkabilly or Funkadelic.
