Melanie Safka, better known simply as Melanie, was an American singer-songwriter whose career stretched over five decades. While "Brand New Key" remains her most widely recognized song, her legacy extends far beyond that catchy earworm.
Born in Queens, New York, in 1947, Melanie started performing at a young age and garnered attention for her unique folk-pop style and whimsical lyrics.
She began singing in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village in the mid-'60s before signing with Columbia Records. Her two singles with the label failed to crack the charts.
