Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Victoria Monét later moved to Sacramento, California, during her childhood. Her family background includes her mother, L'Tanya Chestang-Cubit, and maternal grandmother, Cassaundria Lovett, originally from Mobile, Alabama.
Monét attended Sheldon High School in Sacramento, where she joined the performing arts program after convincing her mother to change their address.
Monét discovered Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins on Myspace and reached out to him. He invited her to Los Angeles to audition for a girl group he was forming called Purple Reign. Motown Records signed the group, but they got dropped before releasing any music.
