Big Thief frontwoman Adrianne Lenker was raised in a religious cult. She was later encouraged by her songwriter father to make music, learning how to go into a writing trance by watching his example.
Lenker released her first solo album, Stages of the Sun, in 2006 at the age of 13. However, she set aside her dreams of pop stardom after receiving a scholarship to Boston's Berklee College of Music.
She formed Big Thief after meeting guitarist Buck Meek the first day she moved to New York.
