She was born Morna Anne Murray in Springhill, Nova Scotia. Though both of her parents practiced medicine - her father was a doctor and her mother was a nurse - she developed an interest in music at a young age.
After she graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1966, she taught physical education for a year at a high school in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.
With her first hit, "Snowbird," she was the first female Canadian solo singer to land a #1 on the US charts (Easy Listening).
