Cian Ducrot was born in Cork, Ireland, and grew up in a musical household. His mother, Sabine, was a concert pianist and flautist, and she encouraged him to learn music from a young age. Cian started playing the flute when he was 8 years old, and he quickly showed a natural talent for music.
Ducrot was awarded a scholarship to study classical flute at the Royal Academy of Music in London. However, after a trip to Los Angeles, he decided the classical institution wasn't for him, and he dropped out. "I didn't feel like I fitted in at college," Ducrot told The Sun. "There were so many cliques and it wasn't for me. But I'm like that now. I still don't feel like I fit in with pop music."
After dropping out of the Royal Academy of Music, Ducrot moved back to Ireland and started writing his own music. His debut mixtape, Started in College, is a collection of songs he wrote while couch surfing between London and Los Angeles. Following its release in June 2020, Darkroom/Interscope Records signed Ducrot.
