Punk rock-star is a tough profession when you're trying to nurture a marriage, but Green Day leader Billie Joe Armstrong did it well, occasionally documenting it in songs. He and Adrienne Nesser got married in 1994, just as the band was blowing up. By 2000, they had two children together. In this song, Armstrong takes an honest look at his lifestyle and affirms his commitment to Adrienne. "You have to compromise in every relationship," he said of the song. "There will always be problems, but you've got to find solutions, or at least try to find solutions."
The push-and-pull between Armstrong's work and home life manifests in the lines: If I promise to go to church on Sunday Will you go with me on Friday night? Friday night is when he's likely to be on stage, but he's willing to devote Sunday to church and family, all part of the compromise.
This is a track from Warning, a transitional album for Green Day. It found them moving away from their punk roots and getting more introspective. The singles "Minority" and "Warning" were just minor hits, but the band wasn't concerned. They took some time off and returned in 2004 with American Idiot, a groundbreaking album that was later turned into a musical.
