Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Everything Changes. By Songfacts®.

In this song, Staind lead singer Aaron Lewis lets a loved one know he's sorry for all he put that person through, but he also knows that everything changes, including himself. Lewis tends to write from personal experience, and if that's the case here, he's likely addressing his wife Vanessa. They got married before Staind hit it big, and she didn't sign up for the wild ride that followed. "Sometimes I say to Aaron, 'Why couldn't you be a plumber or something normal?'" she told Rolling Stone in 2001. The couple had their first child in 2002 and their second in 2005, when Lewis was working on the Chapter V album with Staind. During this time he was balancing between home life and his music career, which wasn't easy.

The music video, directed by Mike Sloat, takes inspiration from the 1993 movie Dazed and Confused. It's set on the last day of high school and follows the class as they get together for a party to celebrate. The idea is that this is a time of profound change for these kids, which suits the theme of the song.

The song came together at the end of the sessions for Staind's fifth album, Chapter V. "I was messing around and we pushed 'record' on something," Aaron Lewis told MTV. "I threw out four or five ideas and that was one of them. It really just all fell together pretty quickly."
