In a press release to promote the Danzig II: Lucifuge album, band leader and singer Glenn Danzig said of this song: "The Catholics and the Baptists have perverted the teachings of Christ. Worshiping their version of Christ could be considered by some to be as bad as worshiping Satan."
Glenn Danzig has on more than one occasion angrily pointed out the similarity between the main riff of "Sex Type Thing" by the Stone Temple Pilots (released in 1992) and "Snakes of Christ" (released in 1990).
This was produced by Rick Rubin, who has worked with artists in a variety of genres, including Run-D.M.C., the Dixie Chicks and The Mars Volta. Rubin took an interest in Glenn Danzig after seeing him perform with his band Samhain. When Glenn formed the band Danzig, Rubin signed on as producer. The first Danzig album appeared in 1988.
