Frontman Ben Gibbard explained the song's meaning to The Sun: "It is a strange love song where we admit to each other that that we've been in love before. One thing you have to shed as you get older is the charade you play when you start seeing somebody new, like, 'Oh my God, I've never been in love like this.' You have to acknowledge your own past to move forward."
