The lead single from X Ambassadors' third album, "Ahead of Myself" finds Sam Harris singing about a relationship that has moved too fast for those involved. The frontman told ABC Radio the song "speaks to a lot of my own personality traits." He explained: "I tend to jump into things very quickly without thinking. I have a bit of an impulsive side, and that gets me into trouble sometimes."
Harris said in a Facebook post the song is "an admission." He explained: "It's about recognizing your faults, while trying not to judge yourself or others because of them. Recently, there have been a couple of important moments in my life when I've committed to people, put my faith in people, made promises, and quickly realized that I was in over my head. I thought I was ready, but I wasn't. Those experiences – those heartbreaks and those mistakes – were the inspiration behind this song."
During the song, Harris sings, "Thought I was rock steady," a line reminiscent of the X Ambassadors hit "Unsteady." "I always talk about instability in my songs... I'm not a very stable person," he laughed.
