Al Jardine wrote this as a tribute to his wife Lynda.
The music is based on J.S. Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring."
This song later took on two different titles. In honor of the reopening of the Statue of Liberty, the song was reissued with a new title, "Lady Liberty," featuring new lyrics and Al Jardine reciting part of the poem on the Statue's pedestal. Also, after Jardine's divorce from his wife Lynda, the song was performed in concert as "Little Lady."
