Imaginaerum tells the story of an elderly composer named Tom as he lies on his deathbed. The album was produced alongside a movie of the same name, and this song was written for a scene in the movie. Nightwish keyboardist and chief songwriter Tuomas Holopainen said that musically, it was inspired by doom metal bands such as Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride.
