In 2005, Sony apologized for its role in a payola scandal, an illegal practice of rewarding radio stations with cash or gifts in return for playing certain songs, which in turn inflates chart positions. In addition to songs by Maroon 5, Avril Lavigne and Jennifer Lopez, the label was pushing Good Charlotte's "I Just Wanna Live" and "Hold On."
The lyrics reference the band's first big hit, "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous," which skewered the frivolous Hollywood elite and later caused critics to cry hypocrite when the band became famous themselves: Got an interview With the Rolling Stone They're saying "Now you're rich and Now you're famous Fake ass girls all know your name and 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' Your first hit, aren't you ashamed?"
