This song is about a relationship in which the significant other has hurt the victim in some way. Filled with anguish, it's a theme lead singer Aaron Lewis would revisit many times in his lyrics.
This is one of the tracks on Staind's first album, Tormented, which they recorded in a month with a budget of $12,000 and released independently. They were thrilled when it sold 200 copies at a record release party.
When Staind signed a major-label deal with Elektra records, they re-recorded this song for their first album with the label, Dysfunction, released in 1999. The song is titled "Mudshuvel" on the original Tormented release, but was changed to Mudshovel for Dysfunction.
