Rose Royce, a soul band known fronted by Gwen Dickey, is best known for their 1976 #1 hit "Car Wash." That song was written by Norman Whitfield, who signed the group to his label after a very impressive run as a songwriter-producer at Motown. Following the Car Wash soundtrack, their next album was In Full Bloom, which included "Ooh Boy," another song Whitfield wrote. It was only a minor hit, but Dickey's "Ooh boy, I love you so" became a popular sample, used by Candyman as the hook in his 1990 hit "Knockin' Boots," and interpolated by Janet Jackson in her 1998 collaboration with Shaggy, "Luv Me, Luv Me."
In this song, Gwen Dickey is hopelessly in love with a guy she's too scared to approach. Once she gets her hands on him, she's never gonna let him go, but first she has to make her move. It's a similar sentiment to another song Whitfield wrote: "Just My Imagination" by The Temptations.
Real McCoy released a dance version in 1995 that did well in clubs and went to #102 in America.
